"We acquire the strength we have overcome." — Ralph Waldo Emerson

The planet Saturn takes about 29 and a half years to make its rounds through all the zodiac signs; meaning when you’re about that age, as well as at around 60, you are reaching an important maturation point known as your Saturn return, when Saturn finally returns to the position it was in when you were born. You can find out when your Saturn returns occur here.

Saturn is heavy responsibility. It’s about tough lessons, boundaries, rules, and restrictions. It’s also about mastery and being diligent through challenges. How each of us approaches our Saturn return and what areas of life it activates will be different depending on our individual birth charts and Saturn's placement within them.

Many people have babies and/or get married around their first Saturn return; both call for responsibility and institute new guidelines into one's life. Usually, if you were born during daylight hours, meaning the Sun was above the horizon at the time you were born, your Saturn return will be a bit less heavy and more functional. If you were born at nighttime, Saturn’s energy is considered to be a bit more grueling and challenging.

I don’t believe in making people fearful about future events. Transits such as one’s Saturn return are just life. We’d never grow, learn, or have any depth if life was just one giant holiday. Having some insight about your Saturn return might help you comprehend some important ways you’ve mastered things and matured, the accomplishments you’ve had to work hard for.

What are you willing to work for? Perhaps it’s your mental or physical well-being. Perhaps it’s figuring out how to best approach your closest relationships —how to be a better parent or spouse and break toxic generational patterns. Maybe you’ve restructured your belief system or spending habits. Saturn will have you appreciate easier times but also appreciate your perseverance to get through challenging times and limitations. Reflecting on your Saturn return, you might think about the person it chiseled you into being and the things you have overcome.
